The Role of Art
Billy Bob Beamer is an internationally known artist who creates his art through use of meditation. He also teaches classes in “drawing as quiet active meditation” to relieve pain and stress. Beamer, a sociology graduate of the College of William and Mary, is also a retiree from the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Social Services, and an award-winning trumpeter, with a 40-year week-end career playing jazz, R & B, blues, and other types of music.

The Role Of Exercise
Stephanie Simmons Gillenwater is a Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor at the YMCA in Salem, VA who is also diagnosed with fibro-myalgia. Stephanie will share her experience with exercise as a way to manage her chronic pain. Stephanie is hoping to eventually begin a group exercise program at the YMCA specifically for people with chronic pain.

  1. The long term usage of opiates like OxyContin or Vicodin can lead to a physical dependency on the drugs without which people don’t feel normal and they want the drug at any cost. The drugs act as nerve receptors and affect the thinking ability and the behavior to a very high extent. Apart from these there are many physical side effects which are very harmful for the patients. The chronic pain of the patients lead to the overdose of the drugs and people don’t even realize when it leads to addiction. In case of any accidents and other problems when the pain is very severe people are prescribed pain relievers which if not taken properly can lead to addiction. The doctor prescribes the medicines for a certain period but people continue to take the medicine even after the dosage finishes and this is the major sign of the addiction. There are many other signs which are when people travel long distances to purchase the medicines, they ask the doctor to give them more, they carry more than one prescription with them, complain the doctor for not giving the medicine properly and when they stay away from the family members and prefer staying alone then it means that they are being addicted to drugs.
